Referencing the introduction already made above, this is a notice to all aspirants who wish to apply for admission into any of the universities in Nigeria to study French under the faculty of Arts and Humanities that the list of compulsory subjects as well as optional subjects required in O level result (WAEC and NECO) before applying for admission into French has been published in this post.
As mentioned above, some of these NECO and WAEC subject requirements are compulsory which means you need to have at least a minimum of Credit passes (C6) in them in your o level result before you can use it to apply for admission to study French.
Also, keep in mind that some schools may have special subject combination requirements for the subjects that are eligible to be used in JAMB before one can gain admission into French. Irrespective of the subjects required by each school, English Language and Mathematics are compulsory subjects that you need to pass before you can gain admission to study French.

O Level (WAEC and NECO) Subject Requirements For French
The WAEC subjects required to study French are as follows:
Five SSCE credit passes including French and English Language plus at least one other Arts subject.
Special Requirements (Waiver) Remarks
(i) EKSU and UNIUYO accept proficiency Certificate in French. UNIUYO accepts proficiency certificate in French from University of UNIUYO and certificate in French from the Alliance Fanҫaise.
(ii) LASU requires credit passes in English, Literature-in-English and any other Language.
(iii) ABSU requires ‘O’ level credit passes in English Language and 4 other subjects for the 5 year Programme.
(iv) UNIBEN and OAU accept candidates with no previous knowledge of French. (for UNIBEN, they should have credit passes in English and Literature in English)
(v) UNILAG requires credit passes in Maths, English Language and two other Arts subjects one of which must be French. Also accepts DELF/DL,DEPC equivalent.
(vi) UI accepts 5 or 6 ‘O’ level credit passes at one or two sittings to include Literature-in-English and other Arts and Social Science subjects.
(vii) UNILORIN accepts Social Science subject.
(viii) BSU, DELSU requires credit pass in Literature-in-English and other Arts or Social Sciences subject.
(ix) NSUK accepts NCE French not below Merit level.
(x) UMYU accepts five credit passes at SSCE (or its equivalent) in English Language, French, and any other three Arts or Social Science subjects and a pass in Mathematics in not more than two sittings.
(xi) LASU requires credit pass in Literature in and English and any other Language.
(xii) CU requires five ‘O’ level credit passes in French, English Language, Mathematics, one Science subject from the following Biology, Health/General Science, Agric. Science, Physics and Chemistry or its equivalent of CEF or PIDELF awarded by Alliance France is or the Pre-Degree Certificate in French from any recognised University. In the absence of the candidates my be considered provided they are willing to undergo a selection exercise.
(xiii) UNIOSUN requires five SSCE credit passes or its equivalents in five (5) English Language, Government or History and any other three subjects.
(xiv) KASU accepts only subjects from Arts or Social Science.
(xv) BSU requires five credit passes in Arts and Social Sciences including French and English Language
(xvi) UNN requires for:
(a) French Single Honours, a minimum of five O/level credit passes to necessarily include French, English Language, one science subject and two other arts subjects one of which must be Literature in English.
(b) German Single Honours, a minimum of five O/level credit passes to necessarily include English Language, one science subject and three other arts subjects, one of which must be Literature in English. Also any language proficiency certificate from the Goethe Institute will be a great advantage.
(c) French with German/Russia, O’ level credit passes to include English Language, French, one science subject and two other Arts subject one of which must be literature in English.
(d) UNN accepts candidates who are successful in its one year preparatory programme in French (minimum 40%) plus UTME pass mark recommended for UNN.
(xvii) KWASU requires three other Arts subjects.
(xviii) UNICAL requires five (5) credit passes at not more than two sittings to include English Language, Literature in English, Mathematics, Government, History, CRS, Commerce, Agricultural Science or Biology, Geography, Economics and any Nigerian Indigenous Language. Knowledge of French or Spanish is only an advantage but NOT a requirement.
(xix) OAU – credit pass in French is not compulsory.
English and any other Arts subject.
(xx) KWASU requires two other Arts subjects.
(xxi) UNICAL requires Literature in English, CRK and either History or Government.
(xxii) UNIOSUN requires Government or History plus any other Arts Subjects.
