A Canadian study permit is a document that allows you to travel to, enter, and study at a Canadian educational institution as an international student.

A Canadian study permit is a document that allows you to travel to, enter, and study at a Canadian educational institution as an international student. If you are not eligible to apply for a study permit, you may be able to apply for alternative temporary resident status on your own or with the help of a legal representative.

The purpose of this document is to:

  • explain what a study permit is;
  • define who can get one;
  • list out the requirements for getting one;
  • tell you how long it takes and what happens if your application gets refused; and
  • explain how immigration officials will assess situations where there’s significant doubt about whether someone meets the requirements.

If you are outside Canada, you can apply for a study permit online or on paper.

If you are outside Canada and wish to study at a Canadian post-secondary institution, you can apply for a study permit online or on paper.

Online applications are processed faster than paper applications. If you apply online, your application will be processed within 2 business days of receiving all of the documentation requested in the checklist.

You must apply on paper if you are applying from inside Canada but not from a visa office in the United States or in the United Kingdom (UK). This is because there is no online service currently available for these two groups of people.

You must apply online if your application includes a request to restore your temporary resident status as a student.

In most cases, you need an electronic travel authorization (eTA) if you fly to Canada or transit through a Canadian airport.

An electronic travel authorization (eTA) allows you to fly to or transit through a Canadian airport. If you apply for an eTA and are approved, you can use it as proof that you have met your entry requirements before traveling to Canada.

To be eligible for an eTA, you must:

  • be 16 years of age or older;
  • have a valid passport from one of the countries below;
  • not require an immigration document (such as a visa or permanent resident card) in order to enter Canada;
  • not be prohibited from entering Canada because of past criminal convictions or if there are reasonable grounds to believe that the person will commit human rights violations in Canada; and
  • meet all other conditions under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.

Some students may be eligible for certain employment opportunities while they are studying in Canada.

There are several student work permits that a student can apply for while they are studying in Canada.

  • Working On-Campus: If you have been accepted into a full-time program of studies at a designated learning institution and you have received an offer from your employer, you may be eligible to work on campus. This means that you will be working for your school or organization directly connected to your field of study. The employer must also be designated by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). To find out if your school is designated by IRCC, visit their website here: [student work permit]
  • Working Off-Campus: If you have been accepted into a full-time program of studies at a designated learning institution and received an offer from an off-campus employer, such as local businesses or non-profits, as long as it meets all other requirements set out by IRCC then there is no problem with working off campus! This includes summer jobs and coop placements etc., but keep in mind that most employers prefer students who are studying on campus during this time period because they tend not to require much training which would take away from the overall academic experience itself so make sure when applying for these positions online through various websites like Monster! Don’t forget about Craigslist too!”
